Color Theory

Color Wheels
Light Wave Lengths

Primary Colors
The most basic form of color in each wheel. These make up all other colors.
Red Orange and Yellow are warm
Blue Green and Purple are cool
CMYK is used for printing
Monochrome uses one color with different tints and shades and tones of that color
Grey Scale only uses black and white
Web Safe RGB

Color Modification
Tints add white to a pure color
Shades add black to a pure color
Tones add gray to a pure color

Complementary colors
Opposite colors that next to each other, they both pop more.
Split Comp: Jump across and two to the left
Analogous: Colors next to each other
Triad:Triangle color formula
Tetradic Harmony: Rectangle
Quad Harmony: Square

Color Props: Cool, Warm, Bright, Dark, (de)saturated
Color intensity: The color changes its vividness depending on its surroundings
Color associations are usually just cultural
Color increases brand recognition
Blue is not a satisfying color for food
Pink is a draining color

Graphic File Formats

Understanding Format, Choice Image, and Compression.

  • Compression: Makes something a smaller file size, but the quality is worse.
File format
  • All computer documents, or files, are packaged in different formats
  • The format is determined often by the files origin, such as a software program like Photoshop, or a device such as digital camera
  • Compression throws away "unneeded" data
  • Lossy vs Lossless
  • Lossy: extra data is moved into the trash, much much smaller file size. Very low quality.
  • Lossless: throws away a little data, but retains more quality
  • lossless: Tiff
  • lossy: Mp4, GIF
Lossy                             Lossless
Graphic Formats
  • TIF(Tagged Image Format), JPG(Joint Photographic Group), and GIF(Graphic Interchange Format) are the 3 most common formats for common activities.
  • PNG is a common web format, is high quality and can contain an alpha (transparency) channel

TIF
  • Common format for desktop publishing, print, photo and graphic design
  • Reatians max quality
  • Larger files, not internet friendly

JPG

  • Created for digital photography and works best for photo content
  • Is lossy
  • Can reduce file size for 10:1 without showing significant compression artifacts
  • Adjustable compression
  • Not animatable, No alpha channels

GIF

  • Gif is good for Cartoons/ Graphics
  • Best internet friendly, for flat colors
  • Reduces size by "indexing" color from 3 channels 1
  • Is adjustable by changing color bit levels from 1 to 8
  • Contains no DPI (Dots Per Inch) data for printing. Not proper format for print.
  • They can be animated, they have frames.

Know your pixels

  • Tif and Jpg are best for images with pixels that blend in color, these are called "contagious pixels"
  • Gif is best for images with flat even tone, or "noncontiguous pixels"
Aliased = jagged
Anti-Aliased = Smoothed out. It tries to blend colors.

Layer Project

While it did take me a little while and a lot of help, I learned the basics of the tools of Photoshop.

Place and Trace

This was a project I enjoyed, because I was faced with many different challenges; but because I was, I have learned so much more about Adobe Illustrator. This was supposed to just be an outline, but I like the filled in versions so much I had to post them as well.

Practicing Curves & Shapes

I think that this was a great prep project for the next project that we did, and without this I would have overly frustrated with doing complex curves and shapes.

Car Drawing Project

I feel like I am satisfied with how it came out, I added a lot of gradients for shading, and tried to have a consistent light source. If I were to add more, it would be to add more subtle details to the body and wheels of the car to make it more realistic. While doing this car I learned a lot about the tools in Illustrator, with gradients, and curves, and layers.

Extra Pixel Art Project

I did another pixel art but this time I had a greater understanding of photo shop, and I was able to be much more accurate when drawing Crono from Chrono Trigger. All the colors and edges are consistent, unlike my previous pixel art.

Mario Pixel Art

This was the first pixel project that we did. I didn't know how to work many of the colors and I didn't  see many of the mistakes because I didn't take off a grid before I finished it. My next pixel art looks much better because I learned how to use the tools.
